Chapter Eleven

Paisley

“And he hasn’t told you why?” Mitch folds a slice of pizza in half and shoves it in his mouth.

It’s our bi-monthly Santa Rosa Pawz volunteer appreciation dinner and Mitch has the entire shelter discussing Bo Mercury.

The last person I want to be talking about in public.

With six pairs of eyes on me, I grit my teeth. “I’m just helping him with a project. Nothing more—”

Sara, one of the newest volunteers at the shelter, shakes parmesan on her pizza a little too aggressively. “If I were that close to him, I wouldn’t care how rough he was.”

“Sara,” I hiss. “You can’t say that.”

“Why?”

If these are how fans are, it’s no wonder Bo pushed one of them. Of course, I’m curious about the details, but I know Bo would tell me if I asked him.

“All I’m saying,” Mitch cuts in. “If that’s how he treats a fan—that’s someone on his side—imagine how he is to people he hates.”

“Yeah, I heard that guy had to go to the hospital. Mercury is a big guy. He can do a lot of damage with little effort.”

I’ve seen the video countless times. The guy says something. Bo’s attention snaps to him. Then the guygets in Bo’s face and Bo shoves him. The guy laughs the entire time.

Bo shouldn’t have put his hands on a fan, but the guy was still laughing when he left twenty minutes later. If he was hurt, he wouldn’t have hung around that long. I think he saw how much media attention it got and latched on to it.

“He’s basically Paisley’s boyfriend now.”

I glare at Mitch. “No, he’s not. I’m doing a job for him.”

All I’ve been able to think about is the kiss we shared. How I felt safe in his arms. Cherished even. But I can’t let myself feel cherished by Bo Mercury. He’s not mine and he never will be.

“Sure.” Mitch raises his brows and gets a laugh out of the entire table.

If it weren’t for the dogs, I would have left this job a long time ago. Mitch and I are the only full-time employees, and the shelter would fall apart under his full management. He’s the manager, but I’m the one that picks up the pieces and gets shit done.

My phone buzzes and I pull it out of my pocket, thankful for any excuse that gets the attention off me.

It’s Bo.

My heart skips, and my palm sweats beneath my phone. I glance around, hoping no one can see my red cheeks in the dim light of the pizza parlor.

But no one is looking.

Mitch switched the subject and has the volunteers enraptured with some story about a movie star he met last year—she was an uncredited actress on a pilot of a show that didn’t take off and she stole his wallet.

But he’s leaving out both facts while he regales them with how beautiful she was.

My place in 20?

Why would Bo want me to meet him at his house? Deep in a hidden place within my
